अंग्रेज़ी व्याकरण (English Grammar) में Tense यानी काल बहुत ही महत्वपूर्ण होता है। यह हमें यह समझने में मदद करता है कि कोई कार्य कब हुआ – वर्तमान में, भूतकाल में, या भविष्य में। Tense के बिना किसी वाक्य का समय और अर्थ साफ़ नहीं हो पाता।

आज हम बात कर रहे हैं Past Continuous Tense की। यह Tense उस समय का उपयोग होता है जब कोई काम भूतकाल में किसी विशेष समय पर चल रहा था। इसका मतलब है कि कार्य शुरू हो चुका था, लेकिन वह उस समय तक पूरा नहीं हुआ था – वह चल ही रहा था।

जैसे –

  • मैं रात 8 बजे पढ़ रहा था। (I was studying at 8 PM.)

  • वे लोग क्रिकेट खेल रहे थे। (They were playing cricket.)

Past Continuous Tense में हमेशा "was" या "were" के साथ क्रिया के अंत में -ing लगाया जाता है।
I/he/she/it के साथ "was" और
you/we/they के साथ "were" का प्रयोग होता है।

यह Tense तब भी प्रयोग होता है जब दो कार्य एक साथ भूतकाल में चल रहे हों।
जैसे – "जब वह आया, मैं सो रहा था।" (When he came, I was sleeping.)

इस तरह Past Continuous Tense हमें भूतकाल की चल रही क्रियाओं को अच्छे से समझाने में मदद करता है।

Past Continuous Tense की परिभाषा

Past Continuous Tense वह काल होता है, जिसका प्रयोग किसी ऐसे कार्य को व्यक्त करने के लिए किया जाता है जो भूतकाल में किसी विशेष समय पर चल रहा था। इसका अर्थ यह है कि कार्य उस समय पर शुरू हो चुका था, लेकिन वह समाप्त नहीं हुआ था, बल्कि प्रक्रिया में था, यानी वह क्रिया जारी थी। इस Tense का मुख्य उद्देश्य यह दिखाना होता है कि भूतकाल में कोई क्रिया किसी निश्चित समय पर हो रही थी।

इस Tense को बनाते समय "was" या "were" का प्रयोग किया जाता है और मुख्य क्रिया में -ing जोड़ा जाता है। "Was" का प्रयोग एकवचन (I, He, She, It) के साथ होता है जबकि "Were" का प्रयोग बहुवचन (We, You, They) के साथ किया जाता है। इस Tense में समय का विशेष महत्व होता है क्योंकि यह किसी समय-विशेष पर चल रही क्रिया को दर्शाता है।

Past Continuous Tense का उपयोग तब भी होता है जब किसी दूसरी क्रिया के दौरान कोई कार्य हो रहा होता है या जब दो क्रियाएं साथ-साथ हो रही होती हैं। यह काल किसी घटना की पृष्ठभूमि (background) बताने के लिए भी बहुत उपयोगी होता है, जिससे पूरे वाक्य में स्पष्टता और विस्तार आता है।

उदाहरण:

  • मैं खाना खा रहा था।

  • वह स्कूल जा रही थी।

  • वे खेल रहे थे।

इन वाक्यों से यह पता चलता है कि कार्य उस समय हो रहा था, यानी वह चालू अवस्था में था, लेकिन अब पूरा हो चुका है।

पहचान (Identification in Hindi)

Past Continuous Tense को पहचानने का सबसे आसान तरीका यह है कि वाक्य के अंत में अक्सर "रहा था", "रही थी", "रहे थे" जैसे शब्द आते हैं।

  • वह गाना गा रहा था।

  • बच्चे खेल रहे थे।

  • मैं पढ़ाई कर रही थी।

ध्यान दें:

  • was = एकवचन (He, She, It, Ram आदि)

  • were = बहुवचन (We, You, They, My friends आदि)

कहाँ इस्तेमाल करें Past Continuous Tense?

1. किसी विशेष समय में हो रही क्रिया बताने के लिए

  • शाम 6 बजे मैं टीवी देख रहा था।
    ➡ I was watching TV at 6 PM.

2. दो क्रियाएं साथ चल रही हों

  • जब मैं पढ़ रहा था, वह खाना बना रही थी।
    ➡ While I was reading, she was cooking.

3. कोई पृष्ठभूमि (background) बताने के लिए

  • जब बारिश हो रही थी, हम घर पर थे।
    ➡ It was raining when we were at home.
